Kupang Lontong

A lontong kupang seller usually also sells young coconut ice because consumers who have allergy on seafood can drink the coconut water to resist the allergy.

Jogja Kembali (Lagi) -- Part 1

Tetap saja kami mencoba beberapa hal baru. Tujuan pertama  kami pergi makan di warung gudeg Mbarek Hj. Ahmad di daerah UGM. Bukan warung tepatnya rumah makan. Penuh tanda tangan artis dengan harga seporsi nasi gudeg yang membuat saya ingin kabur tidak membayar he he he. Hebatnya gara-gara gudeg Yu Djum saya jadi cinta gudeg. Sebelumnya saya selalu anti gudeg.

Pepes Jamur, Omelette Jamur, tongseng jamur...

House of Sampoerna Caf

It was a hot day, as always, in Surabaya. I and my boyfriend decided that we wanted to wander around the city. I thought about House of Sampoerna, a perfect destination for tourists since it offers great museum, caf, and free city tour. We took bemo from our place. As scheduled it needed 35 minutes to arrive at House of Sampoerna.

We stopped at Jalan Rajawali in the corner of BNI bank. The becaks were waiting for passengers there and it's not difficult for tourist to tell which direction to go, The becak drivers even know before we said where we want to. "Sampoerna?" asked the drivers, we noded our head and with IDR 5000 less than 5 minutes we arrived at the gate of HOS (House of Sampoerna). If you're with a partner just give the driver 10,000 for two persons in one becak. Or if you want to be more generous extra IDR 3000 is good for the driver to paddle his becak in the hot weather of Surabaya.

And..we missed the tour bus. The first tour bus depart at 10 a.m and the second one is at 1 pm and the third one is at 3 pm. We were just few 1 minute late and the city tour buss was already at the gate for leaving. We tried to get for the next city tour schedule but it was booked already. So then we decided to get some coffee at the caf. My boyfriend was so happy, it was his goal to get coffee since the first day he arrived in Surabaya. He's craving for coffee.

On the dining table

The waiter
Stained glass window
It looks like a church / cathedral with the cross look a like
The flag reminds me of an old kingdom
The lamp is just wonderful

He was so happy at the caf. In a hot weather day the caf was our heaven. It was cool and the architecture is perfect. The building was an old building with a very high ceiling. I love the decoration and paintings on the wall. I didn't order anything for lunch but I ordered mango smoothies, it was super yum! My boyfriend ordered spaghetti bolognaise with cappuccino and coffee. We paid about IDR 112,000 for all. Fair price for a nice place.

____________

PS: In our second visit we ordered Nasi Goreng Kambing -> Lamb Fried Rice. I don't recommend this menu for you who doesn't like spices. It is very spicy and hot. It was okay for me but I don' t really like it. I think fried rice from the Arabic neighborhood restaurant is much better. Anyway the fried rice is IDR 127,000. For the beverage, the juice is very recommended. I had pineapple juice and it was yummy.

All the price mentioned is before tax

The spaghetti bolognaise, my bf said it 's perfecto

Cappuccino
Palm sugar, cappuccino's mate

Mango smoothie is a perfect choice for the hot weather

Bakpao

Bakpao is originally a Chinese steamed bun. Chinese fills bakpao with pork, but in Indonesia bakpao is filled with chicken, meat, strawberry, peanuts, and my favorite mung bean.

There is a famous bakpao vendor in the city called "Chik Yen". It is labelled "halal" and the price is cheap. My favorite the mung bean bakpao cost only IDR 2500. It's the only bakpao that i love since i was a kid till now. I don't like any other filling.

The best part of bakpao to me is the bun itself. If it's possible i want to eat the bun with no filled inside. Wondering where i can get that. I think i have to make it by myself than. The cute shape of this bun makes me want to pinch and eat it..yumm

Apple Falls Close to The Tree

I believe that every one of us believe in this metaphor. Im not going to write about what characters that I have which is similar to my parents but instead I want to tell about food. And relate food to the metaphor. Food? Yes food!
What does it have to do with food?
Well I believe most children like certain kind of food exactly because of the parents eating habit. Since your parents loves eating apple with salt for example (though this might be a silly example) therell be big possibility that youll do the same eating habit because its what you see almost every day.
I believe ones choice of food is mostly influenced by parents eating habit. If your mother love sweet food then most probably youll like it too. But to me I recently realized that the older I am the more I become like my mom regarding of the food preference. What makes me amazed is that all food that I like lately is food that I dont like when my mum was still alive. And since my mum passed away I became a fan of her favorite food. Its just happened naturally.

From celotehze.blogspot.com
Nasi Bebek
My mum loves this food so much. Nasi beberk is a famous cuisine from east part of Java. Mostly in city and towns like Surabaya, Mojokerto, Gresik, Sidoarjo, Lamongan, and Jombang; you can find many nasi bebek food stalls. Bebek in English is duck. So the duck is marinated and then deep fried.  The deep-fried duck chop is then served with rice and hot-spicy chili sauce (sambal). The texture of the duck should be tender and the sauce should be nice too. These two things will be the successfulness of a duck seller. The garnish, slices of cucumber and basil sometimes added with cabbage are a must.
My mum loves to eat the duck neck part. Here we eat the whole body of the duck, including the innards, except for the legs. Nobody eat ducks legs. But I prefer to have normal part, the duck chest or upper leg. Now nasi bebek has become one of my favorite food. And I became a fan after my mum passed away. When my mum was alive liked it but then I like it more.

Soto Dog
Soto that i usually buy doesn't have koya
(the crackers sprinkle on top)
This food has nothing to do with a dog, it doesnt even use dog meat. No worries! Dog is the sound of the seller that hits his table with the sauce bottle. Others called this food soto dok. The dog and dok come from the sound made by the seller and the sauce bottle. I dont know why but its the special thing in every soto dog seller. So dont be surprised.
Soto is a yellowish-soup, which color comes from turmeric. It is blend with other spices and mix with the meat broth. Served with boiled bean sprout, onion spring, and slices of meat makes this soup a truly yummy food.
But ehI love this food forever. I am the only child in the family who loves this food. My sister is not a fan. Not only soto dog but chicken soto is also my fav. My mum loves soto and well..what can I say for this food Im on my mums side J

From: resephalal.blogspot.com
Telur Asin
Telur asin or salted egg is duck egg which is salted with some ways that Im not really sure how to. Basically its yummy and also yucky for others since we eat this boiled egg as a side dish. This is my moms favorite food and definitely its my favorite. My dad doesnt really like the egg. My sister? Dont ask. Shes a hater.

Es Dawet
I used to fight against this dessert because the sweetener which comes from palm sugar mixed with coconut milk make me dizzy. My mom loves this dessert a lot. I had tried to love it but I couldnt. Until last year I listened to a radio program about a famous dawet seller in famous market in Surabaya. So one day I bought the dessert and I became a fan. While I was enjoying it and tasting every spoon I had, my brain cells and my tongue tried to make a conclusion on why my mom loves this dessert a lot. Though I have declared my self as dawet big fan, still I dont want to try other dawets by other sellers. Im afraid that I wont find suitable taste.

What about you? What food brings all the memories with your parents? What food that you and your mom adore?

Festival Rujak Uleg 2012

Me meters away from Kya-Kya entrance.
Can you see the dragon chinese style entrance gate?
Cannot take better picture because of hundred of people behind me

This afternoon for the first time I joined annual celebration of Surabaya 719th Anniversary in a traditional food festival which is called Rujak Uleg Festival. The festival is held every year as the city anniversary celebration. Foir this year the festival was located along Jalan Kramat Gantung. This Chinese town is famous since the entrance of the street is marked by two lion and lioness and also a Chinese architectural entrance gate. Yes, the street is more famous to be called Kya-kya.

Another pose

Allright i reached the entrance. Can you see the lion statue?

Now lets talk about the food. Rujak Uleg is a famous food of Surabaya. It is a boiled vegetable salad with shrimp paste salad dressing. The vegetable used is kangkong, bean sprout, cucumber, and usually sellers add slices of fresh young mango, pineapple, and jicama. The most important additional ingredients is the cows lips. The lips is boiled, slices, and put into the salad. Yucky? Well its not as bad as you thought, trust me.
photo taken from http://tiny.cc/nr88dw

Now the salad dressing, since this is the crucial part of the food, is a mix of fried peanuts, few slices of young green banana, salt, tamarind water, and shrimp paste. All of the ingredients are grinded and pour on top of the salad. Oh ya I forgot to mention, fried tofu and soybean cake must also be present in the food. Voila..you have rujak uleg.

This is rujak cingur
photo taken from: http://tiny.cc/ag88dw

The festival was started at 1 pm. There are more than 50 participants from sub districts and also other institutions of Surabaya. The best part is the food is free for everyone. No wonder thousands of people flooded the place and I and my sister were really trapped in the middle of bunch of people

After struggling with many people i got my free rujak uleg.
I stole the plate from another participant's table.
The leaf in my hand is later used as the emergency spoon
Each participant worked in group and made the food for the judges and also for the visitors. They wore nice eye catching costumes. Apparently creativity is also the main point to be considered by the judges.

Beautiful participant eh? Didn't have chance to ask from what institution she  was.
How could she carry on that huge hair ornament for hours in a hot day?

I love this lady! She's so friendly and i like her outfit

With participants from Suara Surabaya. Suara Surabaya is a famous media in Surabaya. It's my favorite radio station!!

I found her with traditional Surabaya costume on my way home when i was waiting for the bemo

.And the last part is a photograph taken with an unfriendly foreigner. Don't know where she was from. She didn't even answer my question. Maybe she's too tired, at least she was smiling.

Can't wait to visit next year festival. I love Surabaya!!!

Warung Wulan

Warung is a small food stall. Usually it is located along the street. Here in Indonesia there are many illegal semi-permanent until permanent food stalls located just along the main street. The warung that i'm going to tell you is a different warung since it's actually a restaurant. I think the owner wants to be more down to earth so that she/he named the place warung. Wulan is "moon" in Javanese. Many Javaenese women are named Wulan, maybe it's like Luna which derives from lunar.

Anyway, a friend of mine told me about this Warung Wulan and i decided to visit the place. I've visited this place more than 5 timPublish Postes already. In Surabaya the restaurant is located in Jalan Ratna. Then it opened another branch near my neighborhood in Buntaran. Buntaran is an area of many warehouses, truck garages, and it's near factories. So i was quite surprised too knowing that there's a quite fancy place here. I don't know what's the owner consideration to choose such area to open the business.

The place opens at about 10:30 a.m and it closes at 7 p.m. The warung is so large so that 200 guests can some and enjoy the food here. It's cool and comfy inside. The room is provided with AC and you can also hear traditional music. The music really creates a good ambiance.

Warung Wulan is an Indonesian food buffet restaurant. With IDR 15,000 or $2 you can enjoy the food plus the dessert. You have to pay more for the beverage. The food is nice, recommended. And since it's a buffet restaurant so you have to be smart enough to arrange the food in your plate, BUT you cannot have another extra meal. You can just take the food once from the display table.

Here's my plate once i visited the warung. Since it's all Indonesian food which sometimes can't be easily describe in English,  i hope i can explain it well.

  1. Soup
  2. Rempeyek
  3. Stir-fried baby kailan
  4. Pangsit goreng (fried pangsit / fried wonton)
  5. Rempah kelapa ( is made of grated coconut  and mixed with spices and eggs and then fried)
  6. Stir-fried bean
  7. Pepes Ikan

And for the drink, my favorite is mung bean juice. It's yum. Mung bean is not my fav, but in this warung they can make a nice and yum juice.

You can choose sweet porridge or fresh fruit as the dessert. The warung's sweet porridge are nice. Usually they serve Bubur Mutiara  (pearl sago porridge which is mixed with coconut milk)or Bubur Sagu (sagu porridge, served with coconut milk t) as few choices of porridge. The porridge is so yum. I can't stop saying how nice the porridge is. You won't regret it.

For your information, the menu is changed day by day. I guess it's a tactic to make the customers keep wondering what they'll have in the following day. It won't make the customer bored too.

So, if you have time to visit Surabaya, just come to Warung Wulan @Jalan Buntaran Manukan Wetan check this site to find the location on the map.

Bon appetit!!
